Maya Zelkin, a Vermont Craft Council artisan, creates beautiful and functional porcelain and stoneware pottery.   Using the anagama-style kiln she is able to produce pieces that use the natural elements of the firing process to create unusually rich and varied surfaces as well as a beautiful interior glazes.

The anagama kiln is an ancient type of pottery kiln brought to Japan from China via Korea in the 5th century.  The term anagama, meaning “cave kiln” in Japanese, describes a single-chamber kiln consisting of a firing chamber with a firebox at one end and a flue at the other.  The kilns are built in a sloping tunnel shape and were sometimes built by digging tunnels into banks of clay.
