  • What's new at the market with Micah Ranquist

Hello again Brattleboro area farmers market fans! Your friendly foodcourt-end massage therapist Micah Ranquist here. This summer season has absolutely flown by! It seems like just a couple of weeks ago a bunch of us vendors were cleaning up the property one chilly mid-April day. I’ve got a few questions for all of you. Feel free to email your answers to our new market manager or stop by my booth, say hello and answer a few of these in person. How many times have you visited the market this year? Do you mostly buy food to cook at home, or do you come for the prepared foods? How often do you stay for the music? Personally, I appreciate the diversity that this particular market offers. I can show up every week and go back home every week with something different and occasionally some things that I’ve never even seen before! I went home with something called a “lemon cucumber” last week from Lost Barn Farm. Here’s a short list of things that vendors tell me are either coming in right now, or are coming very soon to the market. We all encourage you to stop in and ask about them and perhaps even discover something new! Vermont Shepherd Farm has sheep‘s milk, ricotta cheese coming soon… Many apologies as there was a technical issue that delayed its arrival at market. Old Athens Farm has their very popular ginger coming to market shortly. Taylor Farm Hemp Company has rainbow, tie-dyed clothing on the way. Wild Shepherd Farm has tomatillos and sweet peppers emerging. Springs Farm has red, white and yellow onions a’plenty! Lost Barn Farm, remember them with the lemon cucumber? Well, they have lots of okra to offer. With a little pork shoulder from one place, some kielbasa from another and garlic, peppers and onions all over… I think I might feel a gumbo coming on! Sweet Pickins Farm has a pretty interesting product that I bet you’ve never tried… Duck fat caramel sauce! Last, but certainly not least on my update list is from one of our craft vendors. I must admit it had never crossed my mind that they may have differing products throughout the season. Jill, from Quiet North reached out to share a little bit about candle scents, wax melts and room sprays that she is offering starting right now at the beginning of September: autumn in the air (cinnamon leaf, bergamot, frankincense) cozy in the cabin (cedarwood, nutmeg, patchouli) lost in the woods (pine needle, cedarwood, anise) coffee on a chilly morning (coffee, cedar, Peru balsam) that’s it for this issue. Stop by and say hello on Saturday. Keep on staying strong Brattleboro! Best, Micah Ranquist Brattleboro Bodyworks

  • What to get excited about for second half of the season

Hello again Brattleboro Area Farmers Market enthusiasts! So much love and appreciation goes out to the farmers this week. Even with all of the rain and flooding there was a pretty good turn out for the market. I took some time to stop in and chat with a few vendors with one particular question in mind. What can shoppers look forward to in the next few weeks?” Here’s just a short list for us all to get excited about! Jason with Sweet Pickins Farm told me that he has plans for a Duck Chorizo. It will be a Mexican style loose chorizo rather than a Spanish style cured sausage in a casing. Personally, I’m a sausage kind of person and have been impressed with his creations so far! “Intentional choices. Exceptional cheese” says Rachel with Parish Hill Creamery and this cheese lover adoringly agrees! New on deck from these experts is a cheese called “Humble” This simple soft wedge should be intentionally spelled with a lower case letter “h” as it is brilliantly unassuming. The other new cheese on the block is a limited time offer that really lives up to its name; “Galactic!” I hope Rachel chooses to include the exclamation mark as part of the name of this cheese because that is the most accurate way I can think to represent my response to tasting this gem. Wow! Farmer Lisa with Sweet Sheep is planning on bringing out the big guns again soon with her Maple Balsalmic Berry Mustard. Her maple mustard vinaigrette is already legendary in my mind, so I’m beyond eager to give this mustard a try! Emily with Wild Shepard Farm had the most elegantly concise response to my interview question about what we can expect soon: “Garlic! Garlic! Garlic!” This interviewers personal favorite called German Red will not be ready for a little while yet though. Springs Farm fresh in from the other side of the country has some really terrific cauliflower that recently got harvested. They have an impressive array of offerings considering this is their first season farming here in southern Vermont. I’m told to look forward to zucchini, summer squash, myriad fresh flowers and herbs along with tomatoes. High Meadow Farm always manages an impressive bounty. They’ve got potatoes available now. Their fresh potted herbs have been on sale for a couple of weeks . As an apartment dweller with a green thumb whom also loves to cook, I’ve taken full advantage of the potted herbs! Squash and tomatoes becoming even more available soon! A mere fifteen steps into the market will quickly reveal a plethora of vendors that are not farmers; yours truly included in this revelation. I stopped in to chat with Roz at Naturally Friendly Soaps to inquire about new offerings. She’s planning a calendula soap soon and I’m personally excited! Calendula is an herb that supports skin health and the lymphatic drainage system of the body. I hope this little entry into the annals of BAFM history finds each of you well and contented! Happy Shopping! Micah Ranquist

  • Micah: First market day experience

Hello Brattleboro area! Micah Ranquist, your friendly neighborhood massage therapist playing “blogger” for the 2023 BAFM season here. Let’s start with the obvious. Could we possibly have had better weather for an opening day? This is my first year as a vendor and also the first year that I’ve made it to the market on opening day. If any of you market veterans can think of an opening day with better weather than May 6,2023 I would love to hear about it! Leading up to opening day a bunch of us vendors spent a few hours on an overcast and generally dreary day cleaning up the space for the season. I must admit I was feeling a bit nervous about what opening day might end up being like. Unnecessarily, apparently! Here's another thing for us to reflect on. Was this an opening day for the farmers market, or a Brattleboro Area Cutest Kid Contest that I somehow had not heard of?! Parents brought them out in force! I’m sure this was at least partially for the May Pole Celebration – beautifully captured on video by one of the vendors and available to stream somewhere soon! One set of kids in particular caught my attention. I’d like to say “thank you” to the parents of the twins that were NOT dressed alike! I know that twins often have a bond that most cannot understand and make choices to dress alike and such on their own, but these two seem to be interested in expressing their individuality and I’m impressed with the parents that are encouraging it. I’m very excited about this season. Like I said already, this is my first summer farmers market as a vendor. However, I’m also excited for the food opportunities’ available to us. I did my thing for a few weeks at the end of the winter market and had the chance to start to get acquainted with some of the vendors and their wares. This summers market is presenting even more stuff to me. Maybe I’m way late to the game, but I’ve never had fresh raw milk before! Abraham with Rebop farm was happy to offer me my first quart. Full disclosure; I would not, up to this point in my life, consider myself a “milk drinker.” I use it in cooking and will splash some half and half in coffee in the morning. I’ve just never been terribly enthused with the taste of just plain milk. Until now, that is! Goodness ‘yal, if store bought milk tasted like this, I would have become a milk drinker long ago! During my winter farmers market, I enjoyed buying goods from vendors and then creating a yummy dish. I would take photos and write up a simple description for other customers to enjoy on social media. I did it because I love cooking, but also as a way to encourage customers to express their own creativity and buy an item or two that maybe they had never cooked with before. Here’s a photo of something I made from a few things I picked up this past Saturday. I hope you consider trying something similar on your own. This is braised kale and carrots surrounded by cardimom and duck fat smashed roasted red potatoes and topped with ginger garlic cured duck egg yolks. If you would like to get some more detail about what I’ve made and who I bought the ingredients from feel free to come find me nestled between Megan with cracked An Egg Farm and Mr. Bigan with his wonderful oatmeal soaps.
